A Cambuslang youngster who can’t walk unaided is enjoying the freedom to play thanks to his pals at nursery.

James O’Brien has a complex motor disorder which means he’s unable to stand, sit or walk without help.

The four- year- old attends Cathkin Community Nursery. Staff there decided the proceeds from their recent sports day would go towards getting James a specialised trike that would help him move around.

The nursery’s efforts pulled in a tremendous £2217.40 – and the trike should benefit James for years to come.

His delighted mum Karen said: “We were just overwhelmed at the generosity. The trike is already making a difference and it should do so for years.

“The physio has agreed it’ll help him develop his muscles and his coordination but it will also give him that independence to play alongside his friends.

“He’s already a very sociable boy and has a great quality of life – he does art and drama classes and goes swimming.”

An accident at James’ birth resulted in him suffering a spinal injury that caused the condition. He has physical therapy in an attempt to build up his strength.

Karen said: “He’s had a lot of examinations but because it was caused by accident – it’s a fairly unique condition – they can’t predict’s what he’s capable of.

“There’s no set pattern – he gets a lot of physical therapy and occupational therapy and he has daily exercises as well as going to Yorkhill Hospital.

“There’s no operation suitable for James at the moment, although you never know about the future.

“At the moment it’s just about trying the various therapies to try to build the strength and co-ordination in his legs.”

In a letter sent to the nursery thanking them for their help, Karen and dad Jim thanked all the staff, family, friends and parents at the nursery who sponsored

the youngsters. They also gave a special thank you to John Paul from Mackie Pharmacy who donated £500 to the cause.

Marie O’Hare, head of Cathkin Community Nursery, said: “This was very personal to James and his family as it was his friends from nursery and their families who reached in to their pockets to raise a fantastic sum of £2217.40.

“We are proud of our children, their families and very proud of James as he is becoming very proficient in his cycling skills. Well done James”.
