Mercy mission heads to Balkans
A 40ft container carrying eight tonnes of hygiene products and six tonnes of clothing collected by a Castlemilk-based charity will leave on Monday on a mercy mission to Serbia.
Glasgow the Caring City, in Drakemire Drive, has collected up to £160,000 worth of donations.
The charity is awaiting a letter of authority for the mission, which it hopes to receive from the Red Cross by Friday.
The final confirmation will give the green light for them to head to Serbia’s South Backa district and the Balkan corridor of North Horgos. There its load will be distributed to refugees.
Charity founder Rev Neil Galbraith told the Scottish Parliament yesterday that people in Scotland must be persuaded that this mission is for the long haul.
“The big priority will be preparation for when people come to Scotland.
“This is a slow burner. People who donate do not need to rush into this,”he said.
