Fun run for slimmers
Group raise £842 for worthy cause
A group of Croftfoot slimmers were making a run for it recently - but it was all for a good cause.
They earned £842.50 for Cancer Research UK by holding their very own 5K in King’s Park.
The 26 participants, who have lost a combined weight of 46 stone at Slimming World, were cheered on by family and friends as they went on the run.
Christina Ellis, who runs the Croftfoot group every week at St. Oswalds Episcopal Church, felt the run was a hit with the club members.
She said: “It was a fantastic event and the atmosphere was buzzing, not even the rain could dampen our spirits.
“We saw participants young and old enter, with a broad range of different abilities and fitness levels and my mum even took part in her wheelchair - thankfully I had help pushing her!
“I’m so pleased with how much we raised for Cancer Research UK and I think the event showed people just how motivating being part of a group like ours can be.
“Money raised will go towards helping Cancer Research UK to fund pioneering, life-saving research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.”
The aim was to raise awareness about how a healthy weight and being active can help improve health and reduce the risk of certain cancers.
Croftfoot woman Pauline Jennings, who has lost 1st 4lb since joining, added: “I ran the 5k for my fatherin-law. It’s a cause very close to my heart and it was really important to me to cross that finish line - I’d run anywhere for him.
“I definitely wouldn’t have done something like this before I found Slimming World, but since losing weight I’ve got so much energy and feel much healthier, happier and more confident – I’m so proud of myself and our group.”
Rutherglen woman Kerry-Anne Curran said: “Reaching this milestone as a group just proves the huge change that we’ve all made to our lives, some people who’ve lost big amounts of weight have probably even saved their lives.
“It’s brilliant to celebrate together as well because that’s how we’ve been losing weight – together. Every week we support and encourage each other and share tips and recipes, and on top of that we have a lot of fun.”
The Croftfoot Slimming World group meet every Tuesday at 9.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm at St. Oswalds Episcopal Church. For more info call Christina on 07733 538 448.
