Close shaves for Kim and Eleanor
Chest Heart and Stroke charity benefits from sponsor
Two Burnhill women are set for a close shave - to raise money for a good cause.
Kim Jackson and Eleanor Young will both get their hair shaved off next week to raise money for CHSS (Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland).
It’s a cause close to both women’s hearts, as both of Kim’s parents passed away from heart attacks, while Eleanor volunteers with the CHSS at their Tuesday Group, who meet at the United Reform Church in Rutherglen.
Now they’ll both be getting a haircut a week on Friday (October 16), firstly at Bliss Hair Stylists on Chapel Street and then at Lisa O’ Brien hair stylists on Main Street.
The money they raise will also go towards helping a new CHSS social group being set up.
Kim said: “There are lots of people I knew who were doing sponsored things, like runs or climbing. I wanted to do something myself, but I’m not physically fit enough to do a lot of those things, and although I can talk for Scotland a sponsored silence wouldn’t be too hard because I’d just sit there with a book and shut up for days!
“So for me it had to be a personal challenge and shaving my hair off is about as personal as it can get. Eleanor said she’d do it as well, as she’s going to be involved in running the new group that‘s being set up. They’ve been offered the use of a room at Castlemilk Fire Station but have no start-up funds yet, for things like a kettle.
“The current group is more a therapeutic group, and the new group will be more of a social thing.”
Kim’s own family has suffered over the years due to chests and heart problems.
She added: “My parents both had problems with it. My mum had COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and my dad had a first heart attack in 1985, then a few mini-strokes, and it was a heart attack that took both of them, and a stroke for my uncle.”
Now she’s hopeful that her haircut will provide some much-needed funds - and she’s prepared for her new look too.
She said: “I’ve had different hair colours over the years, it’s not too different from that. For what some people go through for charity, at least there’s no pain involved in doing this, other than looking a bit daft for a few weeks.
“It’s going to get taken right down to number one but it‘ll be fine.”
