Durie’s Boxing Club was toasting a double success at the Scottish Novice Championships at the weekend.

Cassidy Todd and 11-year-old James Sweeney (front row centre and left) both left Ravenscraig with gold medals .

Burnside pupil James was up against Aberdeen’s Kincorth lad, Findlay Stewart in the 34kg category and the youngster showed why his coach rates him so highly with a terrific display.

On Sunday, Cassidy (17) was up against Renfrew boxer Sarah Jane McDaniel, who had won their previous two fights. But the Durie’s lass saved her best performance for the big stage to take another unanimous decision.

Rutherglen lad David Shevlin (16) just failed to make it a hat-trick of wins during a cracking final against Nathan Stewart from Byron ABC in Aberdeen.

Coach Archie Durie was thrilled with their performance and said:“Cass had lost to her opponent twice so had a big psychological barrier to overcome. Wee James, he will be on TV one day, most definitely. He boxed wonderfully.”
