Festive policing plan is in full flow locally

Rutherglen Reformer - - Crime Beat - Pat O’Callaghan

With Christmas fast approaching, hopefully you are better organised than me for the big day.

What is organised however is your local festive policing plan. Here in Rutherglen, our plans are in full flow to keep you safe.

However we do need your help. Taking a number of simple steps can make a massive difference to the safety of yourself, your loved ones and those precious Christmas presents.

Over the Christmas period most people have presents and possibly more cash in their house than normal.

It may seem obvious, but please do all you can to keep your home secure and your property safe - lock all windows and doors, don’t leave gifts in view of the windows and were you can - keep cash on you to a minimum.

If you’re lucky enough to be going away for Christmas ensure you set your house alarm if you have one, use timers on lights, cancel any deliveries and ask a neighbour or friend to keep their trusted eye on your home.

Any valuables or items of sentimental value should be stored in a safe location.

If you’ve drawn the short straw and are hosting a party with lots of guests, it can be all too easy for someone you don’t know to slip in unnoticed.

Make sure you know everyone who is there. If you’re going to a party, don’t let anyone tailgate you into a house or through a controlled entry door who may not be a guest.

Please enjoy Christmas nights out responsibly - plan how you are going to get home, pre-book taxis if possible, it will ensure you get home quickly and safely.

Also please be mindful of the new lower drink drive limit. On average - officers across Scotland stop a vehicle every two minutes and approximately 20,000 vehicles per month.
