Young Glens see off EK side in friendly

Rutherglen Reformer - - Sport -

Rutherglen Glencairn u21s ran out 4 -2 winners over East Kilbride YM.

With their match on Saturday cancelled due to opponents Tower Hearts being unable to field a team, a friendly match was hastily arranged.

East Kilbride YM were the opposition and it was clear from the start that the amateur side were going to struggle to match the pace of the Glencairn youngsters. The opening goal came in the 15th minute when Jason McArthur was tripped in the penalty area, and captain Ryan Bennett fired confidently into the net from the spot.

But EK were level ten minutes later when a mazy dribble ended with a fine curled finish which gave goalkeeper Chris Truesdale no chance.

However, Glens re-established their lead in the 32nd minute with a touch of class from playmaker Anton Phinn, who curled a pacy, but precise, free kick round the wall and into the net.

The match was level again just after the hour mark when a shot from 12 yards once again left Truesdale helpless.

The young Glens edged back in front in the 75th minute, Andy Quail’s looping header dropping over the keeper to make it 3-2.

Glencairn made it 4-2 when Danny Salah worked his way past three challenges before firing low under the goalkeeper in the 80th minute.

The young Glens had chances to increase their lead, with Phinn, Wallace and McArthur all going close, but in the end settled for a 4-2 win.
