Inaugural Comic Con will be Kick Ass fun
East Kilbride is set to host its first Comic Con next year which is expected to attract comic book fans from across Lanarkshire.
The Big Glasgow Comic Page and The Big Glasgow Comic and Craft Fair (BGCCF) are teaming up with South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture for a ‘Mini‘ Comic Con at the town’s Greenhills Library in February 2016. On the day you will be able to attend a zombie school, learn how to apply horror make up, and a cosplay competition to give visitors the chance to show off the colourful costumes these events are known for.
There will be a raffle with prizes including signed copies of books by Kick Ass creator Mark Millar, John Ferguson – who is the creator of Scotland’s first superhero Saltire – and drawings by Scottish comic book artist Gary Erskine.
There will be over 30 vendors selling comics, graphic novels, art and crafts, yoys and cards as some of the biggest collectors in Scotland travel to EK.
Comic Con started in America and the popular comic book and arts convention have spread throughout the globe with their mix of special guests and themed characters.
Organiser Ian Bonar is looking forward to taking their events to East Kilbride for the first time.
He said: “The BGCCF run eight events per year in Glasgow City Centre and this the first we have ventured out to East Kilbride so we’re excited to bring the event there.
“We’ll be running some workshops and panels through the day and all ages are welcome.”
Gerry Campbell, general manager with South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, hopes to encourage people to engage with their local library.
Mr Campbell said: “The Comic Con event at Greenhills Library is a great opportunity to encourage young people to discover what’s going on at the library through their interest in comics and graphic novels.
“The event is happening on National Libraries Day and we hope to sign up new library members and promote free e-book and magazine services.”
The event kicks off at 10am and runs until 4pm on February 6 and entry is free for everyone.
