Dance shop nominated for top Scottish accolade

Rutherglen Reformer - - News - Edel Kenealy

A family shop which has kitted out Rutherglen dancers in the finest costumes for a generation has been nominated in the first ever Scotland on Stage Awards.

Fitness Fashions in Farme Cross has been nominated in the best dance shop supplier category in the awards, set up to celebrate the performing arts in Scotland.

Owned by Gail and Alistair Dick, the shop is seeking local people’s votes in a bid to be named a finalist for the award, which will ultimately be decided by an expert judging panel.

Speaking to the Reformer this week, Gail said her mother and dance lover Jeanette Bennett opened the shop 27 years ago.

She said: “This came as a complete surprise to us being nominated.

“We have been here for 27 years just plodding along, so it is really nice to get some recognition. It’s quite exciting stuff.

“We are trying to get as many votes in as possible for the March 18 closing date.”

As the largest supplier of ballroom and Latin dance shoes in Scotland, people come from all over the country to purchase their dance shoes at Fitness Fashion, which also provides dance clothing and costumes for a range of genres including tap, ballet, disco and Latin Ceroc - a mix of salsa and jive dancing.

With a wealth of dancers in the family, Gail - a Scottish junior ballroom champion - says the shop reflects her passion for dance.

She said: “There are other shops in South Lanarkshire but people travel to us because we do give a great service, the quality is good and they seem to come back to us. We hold a large stock so we don’t have to order in for people.

“We have a range of customers who come back and new customers are coming in after all these years.

“Our youngest customer is 18 months. It was a wee girl getting kitted out for her first dance lesson, but there are older people as well who come in for sequence, ballroom and Latin shoes.”
