Vicky strikes gold and qualifies
Durie’s ABC boxer Vicky Glover ( 54kgs) won her first ever Scottish Open Class Championship last weekend.
The 16 year old was in the ring against Motherwell girl Charlie Wilson of Forgewood ABC on Sunday, February 28.
Straight from the off, Glover came out with big heavy overhand rights to force a standing eight count on Wilson in the first 20 seconds.
The teenager did not lose a round as she dealt her opponent three to four punch combinations to claim gold.
Glover will now represent Scotland in Wales on April 29 and 30 to compete for the Three Nation GBs competition.
Her coach Archie Durie was proud of how well Glover had performed in the ring.
He said: “Vicky was out of boxing for almost two years and she is coming back to her old self with her timing and her fitness showing more and more.
“It was quite easy for Vicky. She controlled the bout and didn’t give the other girl a chance.
“I was really pleased with her performance and we will start to prepare her for Wales in eight weeks time.”
Durie’s man Danny Burke ( 75kgs) goes head- to- head with Owen Spence this weekend for a place in the Scottish Open Elite final next week.
The Glens’run of good results at Barrfields Park continued as they earned a point away to league leaders Largs Thistle.
Dean Muir and Tony Fraser missed out through injury but there were starting places for new acquisitions Ryan Docherty in central defence, Derek McNab on the right of midfield, and Mark Duffy as striker.
There was little to talk about in terms of goalmouth action in the opening period of the match with Glencairn adjusting to their shape of a 4-5-1 formation.
The pace and presence at the back of new boy Docherty was giving the Glens a confident base to build on, and the visitors shocked the league leaders by taking the lead in the 25th minute.
Two debutants combined for the goal as Derek McNab got past his marker to the by-line before cutting back and crossing for Mark Duffy and he stabbed the ball home.
The lead lasted only three minutes, however, as Largs were gifted the equaliser. Eye on the ball Derek McNab holds off his opponent.
