Man is charged with taxi rob­bery

A 20-year-old man has been re­manded in cus­tody af­ter he was charged with two counts of rob­bery in Ruther­glen.

Wil­liam McGill is charged with the rob­bery of a 35-yearold taxi driver at 8.20pm on Fe­bru­ary 27 and a 24-yearold man a short time later.

McGill made no plea or dec­la­ra­tion when he ap­peared at Glas­gow Sher­iff Court on Fri­day, March 4.

He was com­mit­ted for fur­ther ex­am­i­na­tion and is ex­pected to re­turn to court for a fur­ther hear­ing in the com­ing week.

The Glaswe­gian was charged with rob­bery one week af­ter Po­lice Scot­land is­sued an ap­peal for in­for­ma­tion re­gard­ing the thefts, which saw a taxi driver forced to pull over on the hard shoul­der of the M74 near junc­tion two and his cash and ra­dio stolen.

A short time later at 8.40pm a young man was try­ing to en­ter a com­mon close on Baronald Street when two men ap­proached him from be­hind and de­manded money.

The Re­former un­der­stands a se­cond man is be­ing sought in re­la­tion to the in­ci­dents.
