Councillor Eddie McAvoy has been praised by a major local government union for committing South Lanarkshire Council to an expanded living wage.

The council leader proposed an increase in the living wage to £8.25 an hour at a budget meeting last week.

Raymond Paterson, convenor of GMB South La n a r k s h i re Local Government Branch said: “We are delighted Councillor Eddie McAvoy is leading the way in expanding the living wage. It is one of the most important tools we have in fighting in-work poverty.

“Local government is under attack in Scotland and Tory and SNP austerity budgets continue to punish frontline staff.”
