South Lanarkshire Council have appointed an armed forces and veteran champion.

Councillor Jackie Burns has taken on the role, which involves ensuring no member of the armed forces, service family member or veteran faces disadvantage when accessing services and support.

Councillor Burns will also put into place plans to mark Armed Forces Day on June 25.

Councillor Burns said: “I am delighted to take on the role of the council’s armed forces and veteran champion.

“It is extremely important that we offer support to people who in many cases may have put their lives on the line for our country – and for me there is no greater honour than that.

“The public may perceive a veteran to be someone who is old and indeed many ex-service personnel do not consider themselves to be veterans.

“However, whether you are 19 or 90 and have served in the Armed Forces you are classed as a veteran.

“It’s a role which I am proud to have been appointed to and I will do my utmost to ensure all armed forces personnel and veterans receive the care and advice they deserve.”
