School buses win gets an MP’s praise

Hamilton West MP Margaret Ferrier has congratulated the campaigners who fought to have changes to school transport provision overturned in South Lanarkshire.

Last month councillors agreed not to remove free transport for secondary age pupils who lived more than two miles, but less than three miles from school.

Council leader Eddie McAvoy said they wanted to ensure children would be performing to the best of their ability on arrival at school.

Ms Ferrier proposed an Early Day Motion at the Westminster Parliament saying: “This House congratulates all of the people across the South Lanarkshire Council area who campaigned to prevent the withdrawal of school bus services for some pupils; recognises that concerted and consistent pressure from campaigners has led to the reversal of the plans by the local authority.”

Her motion received the support of 14 MPs.
