Band’s birth­day bash as they hit the high notes

An award-win­ning Hamil­ton big band are cel­e­brat­ing their com­ing of age – af­ter 21 years of per­form­ing and rais­ing over £50,000 for char­ity.

The Michael Braw­ley Big Band are host­ing a spe­cial 21st birth­day dance, giv­ing lo­cals a chance to see the tal­ented mu­si­cians in ac­tion.

They are urg­ing The Ticket read­ers to get on board and join in the fun by se­cur­ing their seat now for the ea­gerly-awaited event in May.

Spokesman Gary Mitchell said: “This is a mile­stone for us. There’s no doubt about it, the dance will be some­thing spe­cial.

“It’s quite an achieve­ment to have raised so much for so many good causes over the years – and all through the power of mu­sic.”

The 22-strong non-profit mak­ing band were formed by mu­si­cian Michael Braw­ley in 1995 to al­low La­nark­shire school leavers to con­tinue to play their cho­sen in­stru­ment.

The band are now run by a com­mit­tee of mem­bers, and they have per­formed all over the UK in­clud­ing Manch­ester, Cardiff and Birm­ing­ham over the past 21 years.

Play­ers range in age from 18 to 40 and they per­form solely to raise money for well-mean­ing and wor­thy causes.

Gary added: “Most re­cently we do­nated size­able funds to char­i­ties in­clud­ing Macmil­lan Can­cer Sup­port, Crohn’s and Col­i­tis UK and Los Ami­gos who pro­vide shel­ter and sup­port for the poor of Chim­bote, Peru.

“But we have raised more than £50,000 dur­ing the life­time of the band for wor­thy causes, lo­cally and in­ter­na­tion­ally.”

The mu­si­cians are stal­warts of the Na­tional Con­cert Band Fes­ti­val and have been awarded Plat­inum cer­tifi­cates many times in recog­ni­tion of the high stan­dard of their mu­si­cal per­for­mance and in­di­vid­ual tal­ent.

Gary added: “We per­form a wide va­ri­ety of mu­sic in­clud­ing big band stan­dards, soul, funk and pop. There’s some­thing for ev­ery­one.”

Tick­ets, priced £8, are sell­ing out fast for the gig which will be held at the The Alona Ho­tel, Strath­clyde Park, on Fri­day, May 13. Doors open at 7.30pm.
