Band’s birthday bash as they hit the high notes
An award-winning Hamilton big band are celebrating their coming of age – after 21 years of performing and raising over £50,000 for charity.
The Michael Brawley Big Band are hosting a special 21st birthday dance, giving locals a chance to see the talented musicians in action.
They are urging The Ticket readers to get on board and join in the fun by securing their seat now for the eagerly-awaited event in May.
Spokesman Gary Mitchell said: “This is a milestone for us. There’s no doubt about it, the dance will be something special.
“It’s quite an achievement to have raised so much for so many good causes over the years – and all through the power of music.”
The 22-strong non-profit making band were formed by musician Michael Brawley in 1995 to allow Lanarkshire school leavers to continue to play their chosen instrument.
The band are now run by a committee of members, and they have performed all over the UK including Manchester, Cardiff and Birmingham over the past 21 years.
Players range in age from 18 to 40 and they perform solely to raise money for well-meaning and worthy causes.
Gary added: “Most recently we donated sizeable funds to charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Crohn’s and Colitis UK and Los Amigos who provide shelter and support for the poor of Chimbote, Peru.
“But we have raised more than £50,000 during the lifetime of the band for worthy causes, locally and internationally.”
The musicians are stalwarts of the National Concert Band Festival and have been awarded Platinum certificates many times in recognition of the high standard of their musical performance and individual talent.
Gary added: “We perform a wide variety of music including big band standards, soul, funk and pop. There’s something for everyone.”
Tickets, priced £8, are selling out fast for the gig which will be held at the The Alona Hotel, Strathclyde Park, on Friday, May 13. Doors open at 7.30pm.
