Children in Rutherglen and Cambuslang schools have been getting expert advice on the best routes to get to school during Walk to School Week taking place this week.
Clean air experts have been delivering special classes to help pupils understand the main sources of pollution and to recognise how significant a role exhaust fumes from vehicles play.
As part of a wider air quality improvement programme by South Lanarkshire Council environmental services the transport consultants JMP have been running classroom sessions for pupils from primaries four to six.
South Lanarkshire’s head of fleet and environmental services, Shirley Clelland said: “Reducing traffic at the school gate and indeed in the streets around our schools means the air children are breathing on the way to and from school and in the playground will be cleaner, it makes the roads safer and it cuts congestion.”
