Chil­dren in Ruther­glen and Cam­bus­lang schools have been get­ting ex­pert ad­vice on the best routes to get to school dur­ing Walk to School Week tak­ing place this week.

Clean air ex­perts have been de­liv­er­ing spe­cial classes to help pupils un­der­stand the main sources of pol­lu­tion and to recog­nise how sig­nif­i­cant a role ex­haust fumes from ve­hi­cles play.

As part of a wider air qual­ity im­prove­ment pro­gramme by South La­nark­shire Coun­cil en­vi­ron­men­tal ser­vices the trans­port con­sul­tants JMP have been run­ning class­room ses­sions for pupils from pri­maries four to six.

South La­nark­shire’s head of fleet and en­vi­ron­men­tal ser­vices, Shirley Clel­land said: “Re­duc­ing traf­fic at the school gate and in­deed in the streets around our schools means the air chil­dren are breath­ing on the way to and from school and in the play­ground will be cleaner, it makes the roads safer and it cuts con­ges­tion.”
