Rutherglen Rovers return to the top
Provanmill Thistle...1 Rutherglen Rovers...2 Rutherglen Rovers returned to the top of the pile in the Sunday Central AFL Division 2C with a 2-1 victory over Provanmill Thistle.
The Rovers were coming off the back of two defeats on league duty whereas Thistle were undefeated in their last five.
Rutherglen settled the better of the two sides and were 1-0 up within 15 minutes. Paul Skivington beat the offside trap from a long ball over the top and rifled it past the Provanmill ‘keeper.
The game became physical in the middle of the park and the referee had to step in on several occasions to have a word with both sets of players.
Credit to both sides however, as there was no malice and the game was played in good spirits.
With 20 minutes to go Provanmill grabbed a controversial equaliser. The ball was played down Thistle’s right flank and looked to be heading out for a Rutherglen throw-in. One of Provanmill’s sideline team made a motion to go for the ball which distracted the Rutherglen defender, allowing Provanmill to bear down on goal and slot home.
Rovers were back on top within five minutes as Mark MacDonald made a great run from deep to once again beat Thistle’s offside trap and calmly score to make it 2-1.
