Castlemilk man Danny Burke vows to give his all when he steps into the ring in the Boxing Scotland Elite Final this weekend.

The 23- year- old fighter will take on last year’s youth Commonwealth gold medal winner, John Docherty, for the crown on Saturday evening at Ravenscraig Sports Facility, Motherwell.

Docherty is a boxer from Byron ABC in Aberdeen, and took gold in last year’s games in Samoa.

In what is expected to be a close and entertaining 75kg bout, Burke – of Durie’s ABC in Rutherglen – says he is more than ready to match his opponent.

Speaking to the Reformer this week, Burke said: “I’m ready to go and really looking forward to it.

“It’s just all the waiting around that’s the problem. I’ve met John before and he’s just came up from the youth ranks so we’ll see how he gets on against someone older.

“He’s pretty much the golden boy of amateur boxing so it’ll be a good fight.

“I’ve got bags of confidence. I feel I did well in the previous rounds. In the first I won it pretty comfortably but in the second I couldn’t prepare right when I fell ill a few weeks before it. I think I only started training again on the Wednesday before the fight. It all went well on the day though and now I’m in the final.

“Archie, my coach, has been giving me tips and I’ve been sparring with the other guys at Durie’s. We’re all buzzing because this is the first time someone from the club has been in the elite final.”

In the last round, Burke defeated a well schooled boxer in Owen Spence from Edinburgh’s Meadowbank ABC.

It proved to be a good, even contest with the Durie’s man working well behind his left hand lead jab followed by thundering overhand rights to win the semi-final by a split decision.

As it is the first time a Durie’s boxer has reached the last round of the elite men’s competition, the bout has captured the imagination of members.

The boxer added: “There should be a big crowd there. I train nearly every day including Saturdays and Sundays. I’ll just keep training as I always do and I’ll have time relax as well before Saturday.”

His coach Archie Durie is confident that his boxer can bring home the gold.

He said: “This is the first time ever that Duries ABC have had a senior in the men’s Elite Championship final and Danny Burke is the man to bring the title to Rutherglen.”

The fight is seventh out of a list of 12 bouts at Ravenscraig and spectators will be allowed into the venue at 7pm. Tickets cost £20.
