Party leader joins campaign trail

Rutherglen Reformer - - News -

Kesia Dugdale was not the only political heavyweight to visit Rutherglen this month.

Willie Rennie, leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, joined local candidate Robert Brown and party activists in campaigning for the Glasgow region list.

Mr Rennie joined Councillor Brown at a street stall in Rutherglen Main Street last week before knocking doors in Cambuslang.

He also visited the open day at Rutherglen Tennis Club where he watched youngsters in action on the courts and was briefed by committee members about the club’s ambitious expansion plans.

Mr Brown said: “It was great to have Willie Rennie in Rutherglen and I am very glad to say we got a pretty good reception, both at the street stall and in door knocking later in Cambuslang.

“We expect our strong support in Rutherglen constituency to help win a seat on the Glasgow region list and add to the liberal voice in Holyrood.

“Ou r team was promoting the Liberal Democrat campaign for a penny on income tax to invest in schools, colleges and early years.

“It is clear people are becoming very clear just how poor the SNP government have been for education. 150,000 college places have been cut under their watch and every teacher and school staff member we have spoken to tells us about the extra pressures they are under at school due to budget cuts from Edinburgh.

“The whole issue of the SNP’s education cuts is fast becoming a key issue in the election.”
