MP calls for action on steel crisis
Rutherglen and Hamilton West MP Margaret Ferrier has demanded an urgent meeting with UK business secretary, Sajid Javid.
Ms Ferrier has signed a letter calling on the government to take action to secure the UK’s steel industry.
The move follows the news that Clydebridge steelworks have been bought by Liberty House.
The letter has been signed by 30 different MPs, with representation also from both Labour and the Conservatives.
Ms Ferrier said:“I am absolutely delighted that a deal to save the Scottish steel industry was reached, but the UK steel industry is still in a lot of trouble and the Tory government at Westminster need to act urgently. Why, after months of calls from the opposition benches, have the Tories still taken no action to combat the dumping of subsidised steel from China?
“This crisis has been building for a long time, and whilst the UK Government have taken some action to help the industry, it has been nowhere near what is required.
“I stand in solidarity with steelworkers right across the UK, and will continue the fight to protect their jobs. This is a vital strategic asset, and it’s high time for the Tories to take meaningful action.”
