A local group are promoting deer as a healthy food resource.

The South Lanarkshire Deer Group held a talk recently to discuss the potential benefits to employment and health which would come from deer.

David Quarrell, chairman of South Lanarkshire Deer Group, said: “With new approaches and some investment in chill facilities, there are opportunities for roe deer to become an important community resource in the Central Belt. Roe deer venison is lean, nutritious meat yet few people locally get the opportunity to taste it

“With different approaches, local restaurants and butchers could be using venison sourced from the green spaces around here, with virtually no food miles.

“There are also opportunities for government and public agencies to use local deer managers to deliver priorities.”
