Call for more LBGT teaching
A Rutherglen councillor has called for more education about LBGT+ issues in Scottish schools.
Councillor Gerard Killen, who represents Rutherglen South, is an active campaigner on LBGT+ rights.
Last week, Nicola Sturgeon pledged to make a “leap forward” on LGBT+ education in schools.
However, campaigners have been split on how much progress has been made over the years.
Time for Inclusive Education said: “In order to ensure that our schools are inclusive of LGBT+, teaching staff must receive LGBT+ specific training.”
Councillor Killen tweeted last week: “Only 16 per cent of teachers have received training in how to tackle homophobic bullying. This doesn’t go far enough.”
He later added: “75 per cent primary and 44 per cent secondary teachers say they’re not allowed/ unsure if allowed to teach about LGBT issues. Generic training does not work.”
