Newton Accies back to winning ways
Newton Accies ..... 5 East Kilbride YM ... 2
Cambuslang’s Newton Academical capitalised on their chance to go top of the league with a 5-2 win over East Kilbride YM.
After their disappointing performance against Dumbarton Harp Celtic in their last match, Accies wanted to get back to winning ways after fellow title rivals Springburn drew with Eaglesham.
The opening goal came from Kieran Zeb’s flick-on which found its way into the path of Martin Jones who coolly finished past the goalkeeper.
Zeb was causing the EKYM defence plenty of problems and when he was brought down just outside the box, he was then able to curl home the free kick and give his side a two-goal cushion.
He scored again before half-time when he found a yard of space inside the area to get his shot away and make the game 3-0.
A lapse in concentration saw EKYM score just before the break when a throw-in was taken quickly and their striker was able to head home from a deep cross.
After the interval Newton were able to handle some East Kilbride pressure and then, with a quick counter attack, Martin Jones was able to find the bottom corner with a nice finish.
East Kilbride scored again before Nad Zeb was brought down inside the box and top goal scorer Kevin McFarlane slotted the ball home to make it 5-2.
Newton’s Craig Fellows saw red for two bad fouls after coming off the bench.
