Pauls have a ball at Durie’s

Two boxers named Paul Murphy were successful at Durie’s ABC home show last month.

Both members of O’Neils Boxing Club in Cambuslang are aged 19 and 21 and won their 64kg bouts at the Kings Park Hotel on March 27.

First up was Murphy, 19, who was a former two-time Scottish gymnast champion and he had only took up boxing five months previous to his fight. In his second ever contest, he faced Sean Gafney of Hamilton ABC.

Gafney started fast, catching Murphy with some nice uppercuts and unsettled the Cambuslang boxer until a left hook of his own dropped Gafney for an eight count.

The fight continued and a second left hook from young Murphy dropped Gafney once again and the referee called a halt to the contest in the first.

Next up for the O’Neils club was Murphy, 21. The two-time Scottish Novice champion was fighting in his ninth contest and faced Steven McKinney of Garnoch Valley ABC.

Paul started well and the Cambuslang man, also a southpaw, gave a masterclass display of boxing by catching his more experienced opponent with lefts and rights at will.

Murphy picked up the pace in the third and last round, overpowering his opponent and the referee was forced to give a standing count to McKinney.

The bell ended the contest with Murphy winning by unanimous decision.
