Burke loses out in elite final
Durie’s ABC man Danny Burke boxed the fight of his life in the final of the Elite Males 75kg competition but lost by split decision to Byron Boxing Club’s John Docherty.
Burke, from Castlemilk, gave his all in the ring to catch the tall southpaw with straight right hand shots to the head and body.
He used over- hand rights to hit his opponent in a good opening round.
But the experienced Aberdeen lad pressed Burke to take the second by catching him with his back-hand uppercuts.
It was all to play for in the last round and Burke fought bravely by pushing forward and going head to head with Docherty at times to leave the decision down to the judges.
It could have went either way but a split decision went to Docherty who was a gold medal winner in last year’s youth Commonwealth games in Samoa.
Burke’s coach, Archie Durie said: “Danny can hold his head up high as he was in against a world class boy in John Docherty and never looked out of place.
“In fact, Danny made last year’s Commonwealth gold medal winner look ordinary at times to earn the respect from John and everybody who watched this highly entertaining bout.
“Myself and all at Duries are so proud of Danny and he will come again from this great experience.”
