A worker at Ruther­glen’s Mecca Bingo hall has been hon­oured for his char­ity work.

Dar­ren Lewis, 40, was named Mecca’s Rank Cares Cham­pion for Scot­land, af­ter rais­ing £1,600 through­out last year.

Team leader Dar­ren has or­gan­ised a whole range of fundrais­ing events from tombo­las and raf­fles to the an­nual Kilt­walk, where he and other col­leagues walked in sup­port of Mecca Bingo’s cho­sen char­ity part­ner - Car­ers Trust.

He said: “It’s a great priv­i­lege and hon­our to be recog­nised and re­warded for my fundrais­ing ef­forts.

“It was a com­plete sur­prise when they an­nounced that I had won. I am com­pletely over the moon and can­not thank my col­leagues at Mecca Ruther­glen enough for help­ing raise a fan­tas­tic amount of money for such a de­serv­ing cause.

“Our cus­tomers are truly one-ofa-kind and with­out their sup­port and gen­eros­ity, we wouldn’t be cel­e­brat­ing this award.”

The part­ner­ship be­tween the char­ity and The Rank Group Plc, which owns Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casi­nos, be­gan in Fe­bru­ary 2014.

The awards cel­e­brated the £1mil­lion raised for the char­ity in the last year by Mecca teams across the coun­try.

Cherry Tat­low, Rank Cares Man­ager, said: “It’s thanks to the hard work and pas­sion from char­ity champions like Dar­ren that the sec­ond year of our part­ner­ship with Car­ers Trust has been such a suc­cess.”
