Award for employee

- Douglas Dickie

A worker at Rutherglen’s Mecca Bingo hall has been honoured for his charity work.

Darren Lewis, 40, was named Mecca’s Rank Cares Champion for Scotland, after raising £1,600 throughout last year.

Team leader Darren has organised a whole range of fundraising events from tombolas and raffles to the annual Kiltwalk, where he and other colleagues walked in support of Mecca Bingo’s chosen charity partner - Carers Trust.

He said: “It’s a great privilege and honour to be recognised and rewarded for my fundraising efforts.

“It was a complete surprise when they announced that I had won. I am completely over the moon and cannot thank my colleagues at Mecca Rutherglen enough for helping raise a fantastic amount of money for such a deserving cause.

“Our customers are truly one-ofa-kind and without their support and generosity, we wouldn’t be celebrating this award.”

The partnership between the charity and The Rank Group Plc, which owns Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor Casinos, began in February 2014.

The awards celebrated the £1million raised for the charity in the last year by Mecca teams across the country.

Cherry Tatlow, Rank Cares Manager, said: “It’s thanks to the hard work and passion from charity champions like Darren that the second year of our partnership with Carers Trust has been such a success.”
