Deborah’s fashion prize hope

Business keeps growing

Rutherglen Reformer - - Green Fingers - Douglas Dickie

A Rutherglen woman is all the fashion after being nominated for a prestigious award.

Deborah Cunningham, 34, owns the Princess Angel Star shop in Mount Florida.

Last week she found out one of her loyal customers had nominated her for a Scottish Independent Retailer Award.

The former Holyrood pupil was left stunned when she discovered her shop would be going up against four other outlets in the fashions and accessories category.

She will attend the ceremony on Monday, April 25, at Glasgow’s Crown Plaza hotel.

And Deborah admitted she’s going along with the sole intention of winning.

She laughed: “I hope I win and I think I’ll win. I certainly want to win, I’m a very competitive person.

“One of my customers nominated me but I don’t know who. I’m delighted, I really wasn’t expecting anything like this. You just try to work hard.”

Deborah, who lives in Cathkin having grown up on Curtis Avenue, set up the shop as an online business four years ago.

She moved into her unit in March last year and has enjoyed great success ever since, helped by her mum, Katie McNally, from Cambuslang.

A trained accountant, Deborah had been running her mum and dad’s cleaning business when fate intervened.

She said: “I really just fell into this. I injured my back and a friend of mine from London said it was something I should get into with all the time I had.

“Putting outfits together is something I’d always been interested in, I was always helping friends out and things like that.”

Charity work has become an important part of Deborah’s work and she helps out at around 12 charity events a year.

She is also featured on global website Shoptiques and recently teamed up with Lisa Hague, partner of Celtic star Kris Commons.

And she admits her job may be the envy of millions of women

Deborah said: “Basically, I shop for a living. Instead of buying one thing, I’ll buy eight and sell them on.

“It’s my dream job – it might be the dream job of many women.”
