Coun­cil set to write off £300k

S o u t h L a na r k s h i r e coun­cil­lors are set to write off over £300,000 in un­paid debts.

Mem­bers of a fi­nance and cor­po­rate re­sources com­mit­tee will rub­ber­stamp the move at a meet­ing later to­day, Wed­nes­day, June 15.

The fig­ure will in­clude £ 217,663.19 in un­paid coun­cil tax. This re­lates mainly to pre­scribed debt, se­ques­tra­tions and es­tates of the de­ceased.

A fur­ther £ 94,421.44 of hous­ing rent and as­so­ci­ated charges is also ex­pected to be writ­ten off.

The bulk of this is from hous­ing ben­e­fit ov e r p ay­ments w i t h £ 52,688.01 not be­ing col­lected. The rest comes from rent ar­rears, lock-up rent and fac­tor­ing ar­rears.

A re­port to coun­cil­lors will say the coun­cil reached their tar­get for ar­rears aris­ing from coun­cil tax, non­do­mes­tic rates and sundry debt.

The author­ity was be­hind on its coun­cil tax col­lec­tion tar­get for 2015/16, although it was ahead of their 2014/15 fig­ure.

The over­all tar­get for the year was £ 110.089mil­lion with the ac­tual fig­ure col­lected £ 109.876m mean­ing they fell 0.18 per cent short of tar­get.
