Groups will share £1m to fight sectarianism
Rutherglen and Hamilton West MP Margaret Ferrier has welcomed a funding boost for anti-sectarianism work across Scotland.
Announced by the minister for community safety, Annabelle Ewing MSP on Friday, £ 1million in funding will be shared by 20 community projects working to eradicate sectarianism
The work will take forward the recommendat io n s made by the independent Advisory Group on Tackling Sectarianism in Scotland.
In its final report the advisory group concluded that sectarianism needs to be tackled with the same conviction and confidence as racism and homophobia.
Ms Fer rier MP said: “Sectarianism still blights our society, and the announcement of this funding is incredibly welcome.
“It shows the Scottish Government ’ s ongoing commitment to seriously dealing with the problem.
“Many communities – including in my constituency – live under the shadow of sectarianism on a daily basis.
“It will take time to stamp it out, but the financial support announced for several excellent community projects is another step in the right direction.”
