Neighbours of tragic Rutherglen Glencairn fan Marcus Whitelaw have planted a tree in his memory.

Members of the Priory Bridge Residents’ Association in Blantyre made the gesture with the support of Marcus’ family.

The football fanatic, from Blantyre, was hit by a train at Cambuslang rail station just before noon on Thursday, May 12.

When the association asked Marcus’ father Tommy where he would like the memorium tree planted, he asked that it be put just behind his house, where he could see it from his kitchen window.

Tommy said: “The dedication of a tree to the memory of Marcus was a beautiful gesture by the people of Priory Bridge

“We will draw great comfort from seeing the tree every day and watching it developing over the years as we can see it from our kitchen window.”
