Spain on agenda at SSP meeting

Rutherglen Reformer - - News -

The next meeting of the Scottish Socialist Party Rutherglen Branch will take place on Tuesday, July 5 at the Cambuslang Institute.

Spain will be the focus of the meeting, with Bill Bonnar of the SSP speaking on the 80th anniversary of the start of the Spanish Civil War.

Rutherglen SSP was instrumental in liaising with the International Brigades Association and South Lanarkshire Council to have a plaque erected in Rutherglen Town Hall to commemorate local volunteers who went to the aid of the Spanish Republic in the war against fascism.

Mr Bonnar said: “Eighty years on from the launch of the right wing coup that precipitated the Spanish Civil War, the International Brigades remain a source of inspiration for socialists.

“Standing together with fellow workers from across the world, they combatted fascism while mainstream politicians pandered to it.

“The SSP opposed Brexit on the basis that it would be a victory for the far right and embolden racists and xenophobes across Europe. We are critical of the EU as it stands but believe that uniting with workers in other countries and developing an international response to austerity and right wing xenophobia is crucial.”

The meeting starts at 7.30pm.
