Gus is up for new Irn-Bru cup
Queen’s Park manager Gus MacPherson has insisted the new Irn-Bru Cup format can only be positive for the Scottish game.
The Hampden gaffer was speaking after the Spiders drew Kilmarnock’s under-20s in the first round of the competition set to be played on either August 2 or 3.
The draw saw the first round regionalised and structured to ensure that under-20 teams were kept apart and Highland and Lowland League clubs did not face each other.
MacPherson insists the new format was about helping young players in Scotland and said:“There’s pros and cons to it, but the main purpose is to generate more interest in the competition.
“It’s all geared toward the under-20s teams and trying to get them playing against experienced professionals.
“It can only be a positive for our game. We’ll look forward to it. It’s the last game before the first league fixtures of the season and it’s at Hampden.
“It will be a challenge. Kilmarnock will be motivated to try and win the game.”
