Head teacher’s job up for grabs

New pri­mary top post filled by year end

A head teacher will be in­stalled at the new pri­mary school be­ing con­structed in New­ton by the end of this year.

South La­nark­shire Coun­cil want to get the new per­son in their post by De­cem­ber so they can deal with the en­rol­ment of stu­dents in Jan­uary, 2017.

Coun­cil­lors on an ex­ec­u­tive com­mit­tee wi l l to­day, Wed­nes­day, ap­prove the es­tab­lish­ment of the post as well as start the ball rolling on mak­ing ar­range­ments for staffing lev­els.

Ac­cord­ing to a re­port to the com­mit­tee, the new school is on sched­ule and due to open in Au­gust 2017.

As well as deal­ing with the new roll, the head teacher will start con­sult­ing with par­ents on is­sues such as the school name, badge and colours.

Once the school reaches its full ca­pac­ity, 550 pupils will be on the roll with 36 staff, al­though this is ex­pected to take a num­ber of years.

Par­ents in the catch­ment area will re­ceive a let­ter about en­rol­ment over the next few months.

The area is cur­rently zoned to Cairns Pri­mary. Pupils cur­rently at Cairns will be able to trans­fer to the new school or stay at Cairns to com­plete their ed­u­ca­tion.

Sib­lings of pupils at­tend­ing Cairns will have the op­tion of at­tend­ing Cairns with­out the need for a plac­ing re­quest.

This ar­range­ment will stay in place un­til Au­gust 2022.

Once open it will pro­vide 14 main­stream classes, four ad­di­tional sup­port needs classes and a large nurs­ery.
