I’m afraid I have bad news for some readers – your council tax is about to go up.
And I want you to know that it has nothing to do with your council.
Thousands of bills that go through South Lanarkshire letter boxes next spring will be higher than they were this year because of changes brought in by the Scottish Government.
The council will not be allowed to keep the extra money which is raised and use it to improve your local services.
About one household in four will be affected and your bill will go up if your house is in council tax band E, F, G or H, in other words if it is was worth more than £58,000 at the time of the last valuation in 1991.
The Scottish Government’s own estimates are that the increase will mean up to £500 more a year on average in the highest band and they say nationally an extra £100 million will be collected.
Now, I believe that those who can afford to pay more should do so and that this money should be used to help those who are less well off and need more help. After all, that is what a progressive tax system is supposed to do.
