I’m afraid I have bad news for some read­ers – your coun­cil tax is about to go up.

And I want you to know that it has noth­ing to do with your coun­cil.

Thou­sands of bills that go through South La­nark­shire let­ter boxes next spring will be higher than they were this year be­cause of changes brought in by the Scot­tish Govern­ment.

The coun­cil will not be al­lowed to keep the ex­tra money which is raised and use it to im­prove your lo­cal ser­vices.

About one house­hold in four will be af­fected and your bill will go up if your house is in coun­cil tax band E, F, G or H, in other words if it is was worth more than £58,000 at the time of the last val­u­a­tion in 1991.

The Scot­tish Govern­ment’s own es­ti­mates are that the in­crease will mean up to £500 more a year on av­er­age in the high­est band and they say na­tion­ally an ex­tra £100 mil­lion will be col­lected.

Now, I be­lieve that those who can af­ford to pay more should do so and that this money should be used to help those who are less well off and need more help. Af­ter all, that is what a pro­gres­sive tax sys­tem is sup­posed to do.
