More fires raise Fernhill fears

Rutherglen Reformer - - News -

Two more fires were started in Fernhill over the weekend.

Rubbish was set alight behind the shops and another was against the boundary fence of the Cathkin Relief Road site on Sunday night.

The fence was left scorched but there was no major damage.

Earlier this month we reported concerns after a spate of fires in the scheme.

These included fires on the site of the old Blairbeth Golf Club, Fernbrae Avenue and a bin shed on Neilvaig Drive.

Robert Deans, station manager at Clydesmill Fire Station in Cambuslang, said:“It’s getting close to Bonfire Night and I would encourage residents to be extra vigilant. We have an arrangement with the council to report bonfires and they have a freephone number 0800 242024.”

Gordon MacKay, head of roads and transportation services, insisted the fire would not affect work on the Cathkin Relief Road, which is already behind schedule.

He said:“A small fire appears to have been lit adjacent to the exterior face of the site boundary fence.

“This resulted in some scorching to the exterior face of the fence, albeit the fence itself remains structurally sound and secure.”
