Glens held by Yoker Match report
Peter Ferguson at Celsius Stadium
Glencairn reached the halfway point of their league season with a 1-1 draw with Yoker. And it was like watching the movie Groundhog Day as once again The Glens conspired to miss chances to kill the game off and then lost a soft goal.
The early flow of play was towards the Glencairn goal and David Crerand should have done better than firing over the changing room building after he was set up for a free shot on the edge of the area.
Yoker keeper Liam Campbell did well to smother an inviting cross from the right by Ryan McArdle as Jay McKay slid in.
As the match moved towards the half-hour mark, The Glens started to settle into the game much better, and Campbell had to race from his line to kick clear in a race with Paddy Cullen, the striker and keeper colliding in the process.
The deadlock was broken in the 53rd minute as Glencairn took advantage of hesitant defending by the Yoker defence. Tony Fraser’s free-kick was driven in low but rebounded back out to him, and he immediately lifted the ball back into the air towards the penalty area. The visitors’ defence all stopped waiting for the offside flag to go up, but the official kept his flag down and McKay took an excellent first touch before slipping the ball past Campbell to make it 1-0.
But with just six minutes remaining Yoker grabbed an equaliser. Michael Bailey’s low cross from the right wasn’t dealt with by the defence and the ball broke for Reece McGillion to fire home.
The Glens threw everything at Yoker and McKay saw a volley hit the crossbar. • Full match report at: http://www. freewebs.com/ruth erglenglencairn/ yokerathl etich7117.htm
