Scotstoun win memorable for Cambus youths
A Cambuslang RFC youth team had a day to remember when they won a tournament in front of 7000 rugby fans.
The Cambus P5 squad played in four-team competition at the Scotstoun Stadium where Glasgow Warriors faced Munster in a European Champions Cup game.
Two of the matches were played on the pitches behind the ground before the final was held on the main pitch at half-time in front of thousands of cheering fans.
And as if playing on the stadium turf wasn’t good enough, Cambuslang finished the tournament undefeated with two wins and a draw.
The team, made up of Duncan Campbell, James Doherty, Alexander Fountain, Robbie Grimwood, Archie McCall, Sam McCarthy, Henry McConnell, Ben MacDougall, Fionnlagh McGhee, Euan McGovern, Finlay McPherson, Murray Templeton, Craig Wallace and Antonio Yardley, demonstrated rugby knowledge and ability far beyond their years.
They opened with a good win against an organised Bannockburn team and earned a hard fought draw against Bishopton.
The day culminated in an excellent victory over Cumbernauld on the main pitch with a fantastic team performance to entertain the crowd.
Coaches Jim McGhee and Martin McCall were delighted with the performance of the team.
They said:“The boys displayed a great mix of team spirit, collective determination in attack and defence and managed to convert all of the hard work they have been putting in at training into results in front of a large crowd at a packed Scotstoun.
“There were some fantastic individual performances - too many to mention - but the most pleasing aspect for the coaches was the great work from the whole team.
“All 14 boys contributed throughout the tournament with great ball retention in attack, lots of multiple phase play, fantastic support running and some great defensive work. The boys played for each other, showed respect for themselves, the opposition and the match officials and made the club, their coaches and their parents immensely proud.
“The team were a great advert for the good work that is going on across all of the age groups in the junior section at Cambuslang and based on this showing, this will not be the last time these boys play at Scotstoun in front of a big crowd.”
