A convicted killer who absconded from prison was caught by police in a Rutherglen pub.

John Wilson (50), who had served almost 25 years of his life sentence for shooting Stephen Barnes dead at a bus stop, was found in the Wee Mill on Baronald Street.

He had been on an unescorted work placement in Dalmarnock, Glasgow, as part of his preparation for freedom. When he failed to return to Greenock prison, staff raised the alarm.

Elsewhere parents held a protest against proposed changes to free school bus provision.
