Residents evacuated after deliberate fire
Police are appealing for witnesses after a flat was broken into and set on fire in broad daylight.
Flat 2, 7 Western Avenue was set alight at 3.20pm on Sunday, January 22 when dozens of residents were evacuated from the building for their safety.
The flat, which had been boarded up, was engulfed by flames before fire fighters managed to make the area safe.
On Monday wood and scorched furniture were strewn on the grass at the front of the block of flats.
PC Laura Taylor, of the Rutherglen safer communities team, said:“On arrival at the address, officers observed that the property was well ablaze and that there was thick black smoke coming from the property.
“All residents within the block were evacuated and thankfully no one was injured.
“Scottish Fire and Rescue attended and noted that two sofas within the flat had been wilfully set on fire.
“PC Robertson at Rutherglen Police Office is appealing for anyone with information in relation to this incident to contact him on 101.
“Alternatively, you can provide information anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.”
