Res­i­dents evac­u­ated af­ter de­lib­er­ate fire

Po­lice are ap­peal­ing for wit­nesses af­ter a flat was broken into and set on fire in broad day­light.

Flat 2, 7 Western Av­enue was set alight at 3.20pm on Sun­day, Jan­uary 22 when dozens of res­i­dents were evac­u­ated from the build­ing for their safety.

The flat, which had been boarded up, was en­gulfed by flames be­fore fire fight­ers man­aged to make the area safe.

On Mon­day wood and scorched fur­ni­ture were strewn on the grass at the front of the block of flats.

PC Laura Taylor, of the Ruther­glen safer com­mu­ni­ties team, said:“On ar­rival at the ad­dress, of­fi­cers ob­served that the prop­erty was well ablaze and that there was thick black smoke com­ing from the prop­erty.

“All res­i­dents within the block were evac­u­ated and thank­fully no one was in­jured.

“Scot­tish Fire and Res­cue at­tended and noted that two so­fas within the flat had been wil­fully set on fire.

“PC Robert­son at Ruther­glen Po­lice Of­fice is ap­peal­ing for any­one with in­for­ma­tion in re­la­tion to this in­ci­dent to con­tact him on 101.

“Al­ter­na­tively, you can pro­vide in­for­ma­tion anony­mously via Crime Stop­pers on 0800 555 111.”
