Rutherglen Reformer - - News -

Network Rail have released details of the diversion route that will be in place when a section of Cambuslang Road closes to traffic next month.

Motorists are bracing themselves for the 14-week closure of the vital route while work takes place on the railway bridge.

Traffic will instead be directed down Rutherglen Main Street, Caledonia Avenue, King Street and Farmeloan Road. Work on the bridge, near the M74 exit, includes strengthening the main girders and concrete bridge deck, blast cleaning and repairing the metalwork, applying corrosion protection to steelwork, painting the entire bridge, repairing masonry and clearing vegetation.

Billy McKay, Network Rail programme manager, said: “We know the A724 is an important access point to the M74 as well as a route for local traffic and we do not take the decision to request its closure lightly. We understand the impact this potentially will have for road users and communities adjacent to the proposed diversion route.”
