Rutherglen Reformer - - Election Special -

Cambuslang Main Street is the heart of the local community. With the decline of the shopping area and the closure of the banks, we have now reached a critical point.

Liberal Democrats are pushing for an action plan for reviving the Main Street area, the appointment of dynamic, professional staff to lead it and the involvement of local people with ideas and vision. We need fresh and innovative thinking to bring more variety back to the street and fill empty shops. We need different types of businesses, social enterprises perhaps, an attractive environment and a simple layout with convenient parking that will draw more people to the street.

The Main Street is still popular, contains key council services and is well served by railway links to Glasgow, Hamilton and Edinburgh. There is a lot to build on. However the unusual road layout and paving has not worked well and a rethink is necessary, linked to the provision of more park and ride facilities. This should improve the streetscape, provide extra parking and create a more attractive environment.
