Girls let their fists do the talking

Duries BC have been teaching high school girls the art of boxing in a new initiative to keep them fit and encourage them to take part in sport.

The Rutherglen club visited Trinity High last month to hold a series of sessions with more than 30 S3 students.

Coach Archie Durie and boxer Vicky Glover, who is a former Stonelaw High pupil, delivered the master classes to try to enhance the girls uptake and enjoyment of current PE provision. And since hosting the sessions at the school, Archie has seen an increase in bodies filtering through the door of his gym on Cambuslang Road. He told the Reformer: “The feedback we got from it was great.

“We’ve had five girls come back into the gym so far so it’s really pleasing.

“It was about trying to encourage S3 and S4 kids into sport and hopefully we did that.”

He added:“We do an average of two classes per day and we’ve opened the gym up in the mornings.

“We’re also considering opening up classes for women in the mornings between 9am and 11am.

“We hold kids classes on a Tuesday, Thursday and a Saturday, and we start from eight years of age, and they can move up a class when they get older. They can just appear at the gym door and we supply the equipment.”

The Trinity Fit for Girls project is a partnership between Trinity High School, Active Schools and Sportscotland to try to increase the participation and quality of PE delivery specifically for girls.

It involved a block of 10 different activities, chosen specifically by the S3 girls in Trinity and delivered by local club coaches and fitness instructors.

The girls were then given information on where they could access the activities out in the local area, and the hope now is that the project will be extended to other classes in the school.

Duries are looking for sponsors for their upcoming home show at the Cambuslang Institute on April 15.

A payment of £130 will guarantee two tickets to the fight night, VIP seating and purchase of the trophy which the sponsor will be able to present to the winning boxer on the evening.

For more information, call Archie Durie on 07734175338 or go to Duries BC Facebook page.

Tickets cost £15.
