A Ruther­glen school pupil starred in his na­tion’s bat­tling vic­tory over Repub­lic of Ire­land in the Un­der 18 Boys Cen­te­nary Shield.

Trin­ity High School’s John Kelly, 16, was the rock in the Scot­tish School’s de­fence as they saw out a 1-0 win over the Ir­ish at Ren­frew Ju­nior’s New West­ern Park on Thurs­day.

The cen­tre-back, who skip­pers Partick This­tle’s youth academy side, This­tle Weir, joined in the wild cel­e­bra­tions af­ter cap­tain Kyle Ban­ner scored the only goal of the game.

Queen’s Park young­ster Calvin McGrory also fea­tured for the Scots who picked up their sec­ond three points of the tour­na­ment fol­low­ing a win over Wales in March.

John, from Toll­cross, also started for Scot­land in the matches against over­all win­ners Eng­land and North­ern Ire­land.
