Fears for store’s future

Rutherglen Reformer - - Gossip Girl - Douglas Dickie

M&Co has refused to rule out the possibility it will close its Cambuslang store.

The fashion giant was approached by the Reformer after rumours about the future of the shop surfaced.

But when asked if it could dismiss the rumours a spokeswoman told us they would not be making any comment at this stage.

The news could be another blow to the Main Street.

Three banks have either closed or are closing and the Reformer recently reported that a fifth of businesses had considered pulling out of the town.

Cambuslang Community Council has now written to M&Co chief executive Andy McGeogh, urging the company to stand by the town.

John Bachtler, treasurer of the community council, said: “The closure of M& Co would be a major below to the Main Street.

“It is the last clothing retailer in the town centre and is one of the last examples of a family-owned independent store that used to be commonplace on the Main Street.

“The fact that closure is even being considered reinforces the findings of the recent Cambuslang Community Council business survey, which warned of possible closures.

“We have been assured that the closure of M&Co is not imminent but we have written to the chief executive of M&Co, asking him to delay any decision until we have been able to develop a muchneeded business improvement plan for Cambuslang town centre.”

Plans have been submitted to transform the former Royal Bank of Scotland on the street into a cafe.

An application has been submitted to the council by CuppaCoff SC Ltd.
