King’s Park’s biggest loser is jumping for joy this week after shedding more than a third of his body weight.

Gary Cuthbert was named the town’s ‘greatest loser’ of 2017 when he lost a mammoth nine stones as a member of the King’s Park Slimming World.

The 41- year- old, who has gone from 23 st 2lbs to 14st in the past eight months, said: “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being a loser when it feels this good.

“I feel like a new man since losing weight – in fact, I look so different that people who I haven’t seen for a while often can’t believe I’m the same person.

“For me though it’s the change on the inside that’s been the greatest. I’m happier, healthier and much more confident now.”

Gary joined the Kings Park group, which is run by Linda Parrott, in the beginning of July 2016.

“Walking through those doors was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” Gary added. “I was embarrassed about my size and scared that I might be the biggest person there.

“I needn’t have worried though, everyone there was so friendly, especially my consultant Linda and I was so relieved when I found out that my weight was confidential between me and her – I’d had visions of having to tell everyone how much I weighed.”

Joining Slimming World was a turning point for Gary who had seriously high blood pressure before losing weight.

He said: “Weight impacted on so many aspects of my life, from struggling to find clothes that I like to fit to not being able to do simple everyday tasks without feeling tired and out of breath.”

Gary followed the club’s food optimising eating plan and swapped takeaway and meals cooked in oil for healthier choices like Chilli Con Carne, curries, fish and chips.

He added: “People think slimming means going hungry, eating nothing but salad or obsessively counting every calorie you eat, but it’s not like that at all at Slimming World. I love food and it’s never once felt like I was on ‘a diet’ – in fact, people are always surprised at how much food I have on my plate and can’t believe I’m losing weight eating so much delicious food and without ever feeling hungry.”

Today Gary has gone from a 48” waist to 34”.

He’s also more active nowadays and regularly walks and enjoys the simple things like being able to run and play with his children.

Gary said: “I know that I haven’t ‘gone on a diet’, this is a change that I’ve made for life and have the tools I need to keep up forever. “

Each of Slimming World’s 16,000 groups in the UK and Ireland has their own Greatest Loser 2017 and winners will go forward to the national competition.

Gary is now waiting to find out if he is in the running for the £3,000 cash prize.

The Kings Park group meets every Thursday at 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm at The Beechwood, 156 Ardmay Crescent Kings Park Glasgow G44 4PP. To join call Linda on 07730349212 or pop along.
