‘Cup final’ looms against ’Hill

Rutherglen Reformer - - Juniors -

Willie Harvey will tell his Rutherglen Glencairn players Saturday’s showdown will be just like a cup final.

Fellow promotion contenders Petershill are The Glens’ next opponents in a clash which could end or boost either side’s hopes of going up.

The Peasy currently occupy the play-off spot after strolling to a 3-0 win over Cumbernauld United while The Glens gained an all-important three points at home to Girvan.

And despite being on a run of six wins in seven, Harvey has urged his team to focus on the final five games to keep their promotion hopes alive.

He said: “Saturday’s game is very important – it’s like a cup final. I won’t bother saying it isn’t because that’s what I’ll be telling the players.

“We’ve competed well against the teams at the top. We’ve not lost against Kilsyth, we’ve drawn with Shettleston, we’ve beaten Clydebank and Girvan twice and drawn with Petershill.

“I think Shettleston is the one team in a precarious position. The others have a few games in hand to play but, when you start playing three games in a week, that’s when injuries can come into it.

“I think 49 points will be enough for third place. And if it isn’t, we’ll look back on the draws we picked up earlier in the season.”

Fraser Team notched his 13th goal of the season as he opened the scoring against Girvan.

Jay McKay saw his penalty saved after Robert Patterson levelled the scoring but a late double from Jamie Hamilton rescued an important win.

“We played very well,” Harvey commented. “In the first half we did well to get the goal but it was the same old [problem], we never took our chances. We went in at half-time comfortable, having controlled the game. And we came out looking as though we were going to get a couple more goals but they got one. We missed a penalty but we responded well after that.

“Fraser [Team] has been a bit unlucky with injuries which has kept him out the team and the two boys up front have done well.

“On Saturday he worked really hard and I’m glad he got his goal.”
