Myra leads keep fit drive
We meet the Fitness Follies at Fernhill and Cathkin
be made to feel welcome. They’ll get a good chat, they’ll get their blood pressure taken and their waist measured.
“There’s other things going on too like a free raffle and we have people who make the tea and people bring things in like clothes and people can buy them. All the money made here goes to the church and it helps boost the funds.”
When asked what her secret was to keeping healthy, Myra modestly replied: “I think it’s just keeping fit. I go to other classes as well and take them if they ask me to.
“I’ve got four daughters and two sons, 10 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren so they keep me busy.”
Myra admits that the ‘ keep fit’ aspect of her classes has put some people off coming along to the group but insists it’s much more than that considering the social benefits.
Jean McDougall, 87, has enjoyed the group for a number of years. She said: “It’s for everybody and you only do what you can do.
“I was actually a founding member of the original class here so I’ve been here for a long time.
“Myra is fantastic, I wish I had her energy.”
Nancy McIntyre, who stays near the church in Fernhill, said: “I’ve been coming for 15 or 16 years. It is great for people to come and meet their friends.
“It’s something to get you out the house and its great when people are interested in the clothes on offer.
“Myra is wonderful. She really looks after herself and makes everyone feel welcome.”
Betty Collins, who stays on Rutherglen’s Skye Road, feels the class helped her get back on her feet after suffering from osteoporosis - a condition that weakens bones and makes them fragile and more likely to break.
She added: “I had been coming years ago but had to stop. I enjoy the company and it does get you out the bed in the morning.”
Fitness Follies class runs from 10.30am every Wednesday until around 11.45 with £ 2 admission, at the church on Neilvaig Drive.
