Savarese saves the day
Peter Ferguson at Petershill Park
Glencairn moved up into the third place promotion play-off spot with a last-gasp win over Petershill.
The Glens started the match like a greyhound coming out of the traps and took the lead with a fine counter attack.
Jamie Hamilton’s direct run at the defence ended with the ball breaking to Ryan McArdle inside the penalty area.
McArdle’s cross found its way to Fraser Team whose volley was blocked but broke kindly for Jay McKay who reacted quickly to turn the ball home.
Glencairn’s fans were holding their heads in the 29th minute as McArdle’s cross from the left picked out Team who volleyed over the bar from the penalty spot.
The 34th minute saw The Glens get the second goal that their first-half play had deserved. McKay did well to win possession and then released a defence-splitting pass to release Team who ran away from his marker before producing a delightful clipped finish over keeper Michael White.
It seemed that Petershill had found their route back into the match in the 57th minute when the referee pointed to the penalty spot, Stephen McGladrigan going down under a challenge by Craig McGregor. However, JC Hutchison came to the rescue by diving low to his right to save Peter Bradley’s left-footed effort.
Petershill raised the pressure at the mid-point of the second half as Stevenson’s corner from the left was met at the near post by unmarked McGladrigan and his header flashed into the net.
And the home side’s pressure paid off in the 77th minute as they grabbed an equaliser. Ciaran Friel’s cross from the right saw Alex Cassells get in front of his marker and he bulleted a header past Hutchison from close range.
Sub Alessandro Savarese scuffed a shot wide of goal as Glencairn tried to regain the lead – and they finally took their chance on 89 minutes.
McKay won the ball before slipping a pass to Hamilton. The midfielder rolled it into the path of Alessandro Savarese who hit a delightful first-time curler which flew in off the inside of the far post sparking wild celebrations.
