Kicking upastink over sewage

Rutherglen Reformer - - Election Special - Jonathan Geddes

Burnside residents might finally have an end to sewage issues that have been creating a stink.

Raw sewage has been going down Burnside Road for several weeks, due to problems with the development of houses at Upper Bourtree Drive.

At last week’s Burnside Community Council meeting, Councillor Robert Brown mentioned the “unpleasant” situation. He said: “Something may have been disturbed in the construction there and it is hugely unpleasant.

“I talked to environmental health and they believe it is not a health hazard, but is something they will look at.”

Now Scottish Water are promising to fix the issue.

A spokeman said: “Scottish Water is carrying out permanent repair work to an existing sewer which served the former manse on the site of a new development at Upper Bourtree Drive, Rutherglen.

“A survey prior to the development starting demonstrated that the pipe was not in suitable condition.

“However, the developer opted to use it anyway and that appears to be the source of the flooding issue.

“Contractors were due to commence repair work on Monday, May 8 and will seek to complete this as soon as possible.”
