‘We’ll monitor parking’

Rutherglen Reformer - - General Election -

Rutherglen Community Council say they will monitor parking in the town when a 1km restriction comes into affect around Celtic Park and the Emirates Arena.

The Reformer reported last week that Glasgow City Council will install a parking ban for a 1,000m radius around the two facilities when events are taking place.

It is designed to keep access to the stadiums clear for emergency vehicles.

With the radius stretching as far as Cuningar Loop, the plan has the potential to impact on parking in the town as fans and spectators look to get as near to the area as possible.

The issue was raised at the Rutherglen Community Council meeting last Tuesday.

Secretary Jim Bolton said: “We will monitor the situation and watch to see if there is any affect on Rutherglen.

“The potential is there to have an impact on Downiebrae Road and the wider Farme Cross area.”

South Lanarkshire Council last week confirmed they had not been consulted on the plan but said they supported the aims of the proposal.

A similar ban is proposed around Ibrox Stadium.

It is expected to come into affect at the start of the next football season in August.
